However prosperous the aforementioned film families may be, they are nothing compared to one joint family who is not just India’s richest film family but has given Bollywood many successes.

The Chopra-Johar family is the wealthiest cinema family in India with a total net worth of Rs 9000 crore (more than $1 billion) and ownership over three production companies or studios. Vilayati Raj Chopra, a PWD employee who resided in Punjab before Partition, is the ancestor of the family. Two of his kids, BR Chopra and Yash Chopra, went on to become successful producers and launch their own studios, BR Films and Yash Raj Films, respectively. Hiroo, a daughter of Vilayati Raj Chopra, wed Yash Johar, a director who went on to start Dharma Productions.
