Carlos Del Ro, MD, has organized events for Hispanic Heritage Month.

 

The Infectious Diseases Society of America’s president and interim dean of Emory School of Medicine and Grady Health System, Carlos Del Ro, MD, will be a guest speaker in Omaha on September 22 as part of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Sponsoring these activities alongside Dr. Del Ro are the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) Nebraska Chapter, NHMA National, the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, and the Division of Infectious Diseases.

  • 7:30 a.m.–9 a.m. breakfast meeting with Dr. Del Ro at the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel. Members of the Urban Health Opportunities Programme pre-medical students, the NHMA Nebraska, and the UNMC Latino Medical Student Association are invited to this event.
  • A trivia vaccination clinic at the Mexican Consulate from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. The public is welcome to the event. In collaboration with One World Clinic and the Mexican Consulate, NHMA Nebraska will provide COVID-19 immunizations as well as the chance for guests to interact with medical professionals to discuss any questions or concerns they may have about vaccinations. Participants in a community quiz competition about COVID-19 prevention will get awards. A $20 gift card will also be given to anyone who receives a vaccination on the day of the event.

This COVID-19 vaccination clinic is an extension of the “Cultural Vaccine Clinics” that members of the NHMA Nebraska Chapter have assisted in running during the pandemic, including the “Soccer Vaccine Clinic” and the “Mariachi Vaccine Clinic.”

  • From 12 to 1 p.m., Dr. Del Ro will provide internal medicine grand rounds on “The Health Care Needs of Migrants” in the UNMC Durham Research Centre 1 auditorium. The public is welcome to the event. From 1–1:30 p.m., there will be a coffee reception and meet and greet with Dr. Del Rio.

Other activities celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month on campus and in the neighborhood include:

  • Athena Ramos, PhD, a guest lecturer from the Centre for Reducing Health Disparities and an associate professor in the UNMC College of Public Health’s Department of Health Promotion. The UNMC Office of Inclusion is the sponsor of this occasion. On September 18 from 12 to 1 p.m., Dr. Ramos will present in room 3030 of the Sorrell Centre. Utilise Engage to register online.
  • The Fiestas Patrias Health Fair will take place along South 24th Street on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • On Friday, October 6, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., the Munroe-Meyer Institute will host Zumba Fiesta with Raquel Cruz in the MMI Gym on the first floor.

El Museo Latino offers discounts to faculty, staff, and students of UNMC from September 15 to October 15. Staff and instructors pay $4 for admission; students pay $3.
