70% of Gazans won’t have access to clean water, according to the head of the UN assistance organization there.

The primary UN assistance organization working in Gaza issued a warning on Wednesday, stating that everything they are doing is about to fall apart.

In a message on X, the previous Twitter platform, the chief of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA), Philippe Lazzarini, issued a warning: by today’s end, around 70% of Gaza’s inhabitants won’t have access to potable water.

Around 780,000 people are being housed by UNRWA in more than 150 crammed locations, despite the breakdown of essential utilities. According to the agency, since Israel’s battle with Hamas started, 102 UNRWA humanitarian workers have died and 27 more have been injured in Gaza.

Fuel for vehicles alone won’t be enough to save lives in the future. According to Lazzarini, waiting any longer will cost lives.

Children sit near containers as Palestinians collect water.

The UN emergency relief coordinator, Martin Griffiths, echoed Lazzarini’s calls, saying that the “carnage” in Gaza “cannot be allowed to continue.”

In a statement, he said that every day, the slaughter in Gaza reaches new heights of depravity and that the world is left in disbelief as hospitals are hit, premature babies perish, and a whole community is denied the necessities of life. He pleaded with the “warring parties” to abide by international law and agree to a humanitarian ceasefire.

The Palestinian Health Ministry in Ramallah, citing medical sources in the Hamas-controlled enclave, claims that over 11,000 people have died as a result of Israeli bombings carried out in retaliation for Hamas’ onslaught on Israel more than a month ago. A fuel blockade has caused hospitals, water systems, bakeries, and other facilities dependent on energy to close, resulting in a worsening humanitarian crisis.
