UN mission to Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital is led by WHO

UN mission to Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital is led by WHOThe World Health Organization (WHO) said in a post on X that a team of UN humanitarian workers paid a visit to the Al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza on Saturday.

According to the WHO, the group was inside the hospital for an hour, during which there was intense fighting near the building. The hospital was referred to by UN personnel as a “death zone” with “signs of shelling and gunfire” visible.

According to the statement, the team discovered a mass grave at the hospital’s entrance and was informed that over 80 victims were interred there. The WHO reports that a number of people have died in the last two to three days due to insufficient medical attention.

KHAN YUNIS, GAZA –

According to the statement, there are currently 291 patients and 25 medical personnel in Al-Shifa. Several patient deaths have been attributed to the closure of medical services over the past two to three days.

According to the statement, the patients consist of 22 dialysis patients whose access to life-saving care has been severely hampered, two individuals in intensive care without ventilation, and 32 newborns in extremely critical condition.

When staff and patients met with UN delegates, according to WHO, they “pleaded for evacuation” and expressed fear for their health and safety.

The WHO is frantically making arrangements and has announced that staff and patients will be relocated to two hospitals in the southern part of Gaza.

The World Health Organisation stated that 29 patients have severe spinal injuries that prevent them from moving without medical assistance and that the great majority of patients are victims of battle trauma. These patients include several who have complex fractures and amputations, head injuries, burns, chest and stomach wounds, and burns.

Israel maintains that Hamas has established a command center beneath the hospital complex and is exploiting it for military reasons. However, both hospital administrators and Hamas have consistently refuted these charges.

In the days that have passed, the hospital has changed from a civilian haven to a combat zone, with intense fighting occurring both inside and outside the facility amid a humanitarian crisis that is already swiftly getting worse.

Israel is under increasing international pressure to substantiate its allegations on Hamas’s hospital infiltration in order to support some of its military actions, which could otherwise amount to a grave breach of international humanitarian law.
