A four-day combat truce, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council, is “not enough” to support assistance efforts in Gaza.
According to the Norwegian Refugee Council, assistance operations in Gaza must be expanded over a longer period of time than a four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. This pause should eventually lead to a complete ceasefire.
The secretary general of the humanitarian organisation, Jan Egeland, stated in a statement on Wednesday that during the four-day humanitarian pause, we will make every effort to help those in need in Gaza.
After six weeks of war, killing, and destruction, a few days of respite are insufficient to address the enormous requirements, he said, adding that the humanitarian halt agreed upon by armed factions in Gaza and Israel must pave the way for an extended ceasefire.
Egeland also outlined a few of the difficulties Gazans would face as winter approaches.
Winter is coming, and it would be disastrous if this fight broke out again. Numerous people have been kept in small shelters with minimal access to food and water, as well as growing health risks. Many traumatised children will grow up without their parents or siblings. They require long-term, critical assistance. According to Egeland’s statement, a sustained ceasefire is the only way for this to occur.
Egeland went on to say that in either political or military negotiations, neither hostages nor access to humanitarian aid should ever be used as negotiating chips.
