BASE HIT BY STRIKE WITH US TROOPS; SMALL INJURIES

An American military spokesman in Iraq claimed that a strike early on Tuesday caused “minor injuries to U.S. personnel and damage to infrastructure” at a base housing American forces.

U.S. soldiers “responded in self-defence against those who carried out the strike” on the al-Asad military installation in western Iraq, the official stated. Following militant attacks on the base on Tuesday, a second defence official confirmed that a U.S. gunship was deployed in a retaliation strike. Due to their lack of authority to speak in public on the subject, both officials spoke under the condition of anonymity.

At least three people were injured and one militia member was killed in an early Tuesday drone strike on two pickup vehicles associated with the Kataeb Hezbollah militia, according to two militia officials. The strike occurred on a highway west of Baghdad.

The strike struck a convoy that was on its way from Anbar to Baghdad, according to the militia officials, who also spoke under the condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak to the media. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of militias supported by Iran, announced in a statement later on Tuesday that one of its fighters had died in Iraq as a result of what it claimed to be an American airstrike.

Whether the strike that killed the Kataeb Hezbollah member was a response to the attack on the al-Assad base was not immediately apparent.

The two events occur as insurgents with Iranian support have attacked American personnel’s bases and other sites in Iraq and Syria numerous times since October 17. At least sixty American personnel have reported minor injuries, even though the majority of the more than fifty attacks have been ineffective. According to the militant groups, America’s support of Israel in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict is the reason for the strikes.
