April 5, 2025 — NBA Update
The Los Angeles Lakers made a big leap in the Western Conference standings Friday night, climbing to third place after a crucial victory over the New Orleans Pelicans and a Denver Nuggets loss that reshuffled the playoff picture.
Lakers Handle Business Against Pelicans
In a high-stakes matchup with playoff implications, the Lakers defeated the Pelicans 121-109 in a dominant performance. LeBron James led the way with 28 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds, while Anthony Davis added 24 points and 11 boards against his former team.
The Lakers’ defense tightened up in the second half, holding the Pelicans to just 42 points after halftime, while their offense capitalized on fast breaks and second-chance points. D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves also chipped in with clutch shooting, combining for 35 points.
“We’re peaking at the right time,” said head coach Darvin Ham. “Our chemistry is strong and the guys are locked in.”
Nuggets Slip After Shocking Loss to Suns
While the Lakers were celebrating in New Orleans, the Denver Nuggets were stunned by the Phoenix Suns, losing 113-106 in Denver. The defeat dropped the defending champions to fourth place in the West, giving the Lakers a crucial edge in playoff seeding.
Despite Nikola Jokić’s 29-point triple-double, the Nuggets struggled with turnovers and poor three-point shooting, allowing the Suns to go on a late 12-2 run and seal the win.

What This Means for the Playoffs
With the regular season winding down, playoff seeding becomes more crucial than ever. By moving to third place, the Lakers have:
- Avoided the Play-In Tournament
- Gained home-court advantage for the first round
- Positioned themselves to potentially avoid facing Denver until the Conference Finals
Their final three games will be key in maintaining this position, with matchups against the Clippers, Kings, and Mavericks.
Pelicans Slide to 8th
The loss was also damaging for New Orleans, who now sit in eighth place, teetering on the edge of the play-in bracket. Zion Williamson had 21 points but struggled to find rhythm in the second half.
“We’ve got to regroup fast,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said post-game. “Every game is a playoff game from here on out.”
