After 15 years, Shrek is back—but not everyone is thrilled.
On Thursday, Universal Pictures released the first teaser trailer for Shrek 5, officially announcing its release date. The beloved franchise will see Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy return as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, along with a brand-new cast addition—Zendaya as Felicia, one of Shrek and Fiona’s triplets.
While the news of Shrek’s revival has left fans excited, a peculiar animation detail has sparked mixed reactions online. Some fans feel that the new animation style makes the characters look older, with Shrek’s forehead wrinkles and Donkey’s greying fur standing out in particular.
The Teaser’s Strange Yet Hilarious Moment
The teaser clip features a funny yet bizarre moment where Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and Felicia gather around a magic mirror, asking:
“Who’s the fairest of them all?”
The mirror answers unexpectedly: “Why, Shrek, of course!” before displaying a hilarious slideshow of Shrek in oversized glasses, making a duck face, dancing in a skintight bodysuit, and even a heavily edited version of him with abs.
The final image causes Shrek and Donkey to scream in terror, while Felicia cringes and says, “Ew, dad.” Fiona, on the other hand, playfully reacts with, “Oooh, mama like.”
Pinocchio also makes a brief appearance, hilariously denying responsibility for the images—only for his nose to grow, exposing his lie.
Fans Divided Over the Animation Style
Although the teaser has fueled excitement, some fans have voiced concerns about the new animation style. Many took to social media to express their unease:
- “Eyo, why does Shrek look so old?” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
- “What’s up with their faces? They look weird,” another commented.
Despite this, longtime fans of the franchise remain eager for the film’s release, hoping that the humor and heart of Shrek remain intact.
Shrek’s Long-Awaited Comeback
The last installment, Shrek Forever After, was released in 2010, making this a 15-year wait for the next chapter. With the original cast returning and fresh new additions, Shrek 5 is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated animated films of the decade.
Will the new animation style grow on fans, or will it remain a controversial change? Only time will tell. Shrek 5 is set to hit theaters in 2025.
